Ramsey Family Papers
Proclamation Establishing the Town of Knoxville and Other Materials
This collection houses three copies of a broadside announcing the establishment of Knoxville, Tennessee in 1791. Also included is a letter from James White to Lewis Robert Rhea authorizing him to retrieve some horses that had been stolen.
Knox County (Tenn.) Records
The Knox County Records, 1794-1832, contain four items pertaining to Knox County, Tenn. They consist of a court testimony from 1794, signed by F. A. Ramsey and Gavin Black, a court order and a marriage certificate from 1821, and a State of Tennessee Bank receipt from 1832.

David Henley Letter to Richard Harrison
In this letter, David Henley reports that he has "forwarded Crozier and King's accounts for sundry articles of merchandize furnished for the Indian and Quarter Masters Departments and for the use of my office from April to December 1798." In all, the men are owed $451.99, which may be paid to their attorney, Samuel Meeker.
Joseph C. Strong Journals
The first of the journals in this collection recounts Joseph C. Strong's service in the U. S. Navy aboard the warship Trumbull as it escorted other ships from London to the Caribbean in 1800 and 1801. The second larger journal tells of Strong's activities in and around Knoxville in 1816 as he helped to establish a Bible Society. Both of these journals are typewritten copies of the originals.
James White Papers
This collection consists of papers documenting James White of Knoxville, Tennessee, including genealogical records from the White family Bible and a photocopy of a legal document. A short biography of James White is also included.

John Watkins Papers
This collection consists primarily of letters that John Watkins, then serving with the 19th Ohio Light Artillery, wrote to his fiancee, Sarah Probert, and other family members. In them, he discusses his experiences in the Civil War, including his unit's participation in the East Tennessee Campaign and the Battle of Fort Sanders. Also included are family diaries, photographs, and account books.
William C. Mynatt Letters
This collection houses four letters written to Major William C. Mynatt in Knoxville, Tennessee. The majority discuss federal taxes and pensions, but one announces an engagement.
Frédéric Espérandieu Notebook
This notebook (handwritten primarily in French) contains notes on the books that the Reverend Frédéric Espérandieu read between 1822 and 1824. A number of apparently original poems, likely written by Rev. Espérandieu, are also included.

This collection houses 47 documents and typewritten notes showing the operations of East Tennessee College during the first part of the 19th century.
A. J. Kennedy Ledger
This bound ledger records the accounts of A. J. Kennedy's sawmill. It begins with an alphabetical list of customers (some of whom were prominent early citizens of Knoxville) and goes on with an itemized list of charges. These charges were incurred for such things as hauling flour to river, loads of wood, loads of hay, quarts of whiskey, scantling, making three pairs of shoes, and various other consumer items.
E. S. Chesbrough Letter
E. S. Chesbrough wrote this letter to H. M. Nelson, a civil engineer in Faytteville, North Carolina, from Knoxville, Tennessee on June 12, 1837. In it, Chesbrough describes spending the night with a local family in a small cabin, mentions his duties as a surveyor, and discusses some church matters. This collection also houses a typewritten transcript of the original letter.

William Gibbs McAdoo Diary Extracts
Two versions of William Gibbs McAdoo's diary documenting his life from 1846 to 1894. McAdoo wrote this diary and series of letters during the Mexican War, Civil War, and through his later years until 1894. Volume 1 is the draft version of the compilation of these extracts and Volume 2 is the final version.
R. M. Moore Letter
In this letter to his friend John D. McAdoo of Clinton, Tennessee, R. M. Moore discusses his health and the state of affairs at East Tennessee University in addition to sending news of several mutual friends.
